Questions answered 10/21/22 - episode 84

Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!

In this week’s episode we cover:

1. Hello from Australia! I love watching your videos on Saturday mornings when I have a lie in and husband entertains the kids. I always knit along whilst you chat and answer questions. Such a lovely ritual. I'm just finishing up your Baubles pattern but gearing up to do the last section of the pattern... the trickiest Brioche ill have ever knitted, i keep putting it off because im scared! its so beautiful by the way. so I have 2 questions (one about baubles and one about another pattern) question 1: lifelines. I use a lifeline in the lace so when I slip up and lose concentration I pull back to the knit/purl row, but for the tricky brioche bit, where do you recommend placing a lifeline? question 2: for the next pattern I'll begin- Winters beach cardi; I've just realised it has no buttons, I think you've mentioned before, but could you give me an indication of the best method of doing a button hole band for this cardi? if you were going to do buttons on this particular pattern of yours, which method would you use? I was planning I think to just do one button I think, in the middle. Anyway, it would absolutely delight me to hear my question answered when I watch along one of these weekends :)

2. I am curious about sock heel techniques and the advantages or disadvantages of different types. Last fall I participated in the Curio KAL because I was interested in the afterthought heel. I had made several unsatisfactory attempts at different cuff-down socks where I got lost while turning a traditional heel. I loved the Curio socks and have made two more pairs! I have now moved on the the DRK Everyday socks and notice that you are using a different heel technique. Why? I would love to hear your thoughts around how you choose a heel technique for a pattern.

3. I can't decide which of your "big" shawls to knit. I've only knit one skein shawls so far and don't find them very useful. I like ponchos, but want to try something different. I'd like a really cozy drapey shawl with good depth at the back. I've never tried half fisherman's rib or brioche so am hesitant to try a pattern with these stitches in it. I need a pattern where row count isn't critical, ie I'll be able to increase the size if necessary. I never seem to be able to match row gauge in a pattern. Which of your shawls do you recommend?

4. Hi Andrea ! Love love your podcast ♥️ I am soooo confused about putting my spinning on a storage bobbin. So when I put it on storage bobbins and I am ready to ply; do I have to then put it back on a different bobbin so that it is going the way I spun it in the first place? I swore you said we could put it on storage bobbins and then ply from those. However some of the ladies in our spinning group think we would have to set it back to the way we spun it. Please un confuse me lol. (Is that a word🤔)

5. For 2 color colorwork, I hold one color in each hand. (Which I learned from one of your Weekly videos!) but there’s been a few times where I have to have three colors going and I really struggle trying to figure out how to hold it all. I’m curious what you do. Do you hold two in one hand, and one in the other? Or do you drop a strand and pick it back up when needed? Or something else? I just need to find a much better way of doing it. help!!
