You might think there’s nothing better than a nice sunny day for getting out and photographing some great location portraits. But in reality, full sun is often uncomfortably hot to work in and the harsh shadows it creates are not a good look for anyone.
Luckily photographer Gavin Hoey has 5 simple tips which will help you find the perfect portrait light on even the sunniest of days.
Starting a simple tip of finding some shade, Gavin moves on to use the Manfrotto Halo Compact diffuser and creates his own shade. Next, he shares what you can do when there’s simply no shade anywhere in sight. By exposing for the highlights or turning his model Jade's back to the sun, Gavin is able to keep shooting in open spaces.
Finally, Gavin uses a carefully positioned Glow softbox to place some shade on his model Jade. He then shows how high-speed sync flash can be used to balance the ambient light and flash together to make the perfect exposure to sunlight.
