Photographing Woodlands in Harsh Conditions | Tips and Techniques
In this video, I discuss the challenges of photographing woodlands in harsh conditions, such as heavy rain, strong winds, or bright sunlight. Join me as I navigate the unpredictable elements and share practical tips for capturing stunning woodland scenes.
Here are a few handy tips...
Embrace the Conditions: Use them to your advantage rather than avoiding the elements. Rain enhances the greens, and wind creates motion in foliage. If it's a bright sunny day, as in my video, there are things you can do to help with that, too!
Focus on Composition: Look for leading lines, natural frames, and textures to bring your woodland images to life, even with low visibility. Lighting in the Forest: Soft, diffused light on overcast days is perfect for avoiding harsh shadows and bringing out natural colours.
IF IT'S BRIGHT AND SUNNY, then don't despair! Dappled light can be great to photograph. Look out for single shards of light breaking through the canopy and lighting up aspects in the frame. A small bush, tree branch or even dead foliage such as ferns work well. Under such conditions, the best advice I can offer is to use a shallow depth of field. Isolating a subject and blurring the background out will look as good as mist or fog if done right!
Be Patient: Woodland photography often requires waiting for the right moment. Take your time and be open to the ever-changing light and weather.
Lower your expectations. Woodland Photography is easy, but achieving award-winning images needs more than a pretty tree!
