The end of summer means a stunning display of autumn colour, as the chlorophyll in plants is broken down and withdrawn from the leaves.
Cooler climates bring out the best in autumn colour, but Jane says you’d be surprised how many Australian plants bring the colour in autumn too.

Banksias:
Banksias do exceptionally well when the temperature drops. They work well in a pot in poorly drained areas.

Native correas:
Native correas have lots of different varieties available, all with beautiful flowers at this time of year.

Long-leaf wax flower:
Philotheca has white flowers and fragrant foliage.

Small crowea:
Crowea has fragrant foliage and a mass of mauve flowers.

Outside of natives there’s plenty of other plants turning up in autumn.

Chrysanthemums:
Chrysanthemums are a classic for Mother’s Day, with hundreds of modern cultivars available. Great in a pot, Jane says chop them back after flowering and then plant them in the garden.

Camellias:
A classic camellia display is a star feature of any autumn garden. Hedged, espaliered, it’s an adaptable plant. There are over 30000 varieties available!

Cyclamen:
Wonderful indoor colour can be had with cyclamens, who love a brightly lit situation indoors well away from any heaters. When the flowers go limp, press and twist off the stems without damaging the corm.

Kalanchoe:
Vibrant Kalanchoe should be brought indoors over frosts if you live in a cold area.

Edibles:
Many edible plants also offer colour, including crab apples, persimmons, red veined sorrel, lettuce and rainbow chard.
